(and Other Family Remembrances)
This is a book of Fowler family history from my childhood to middle age. If you are a baby boomer, you will find this interesting. I Was a Kid . . . is available in e-book form only
From the Foreword (Opening Nostalgic Essay):
One of my favorite pastimes was the purchase of baseball cards. Like the Bell System, The Topps Trading Card Co. had a monopoly on their market during the 1950's and '60's and, if one wanted a bubblegum card collection, then one had no choice but to buy Topps Trading Cards.
But, the Topps people were OK with me because a nickel would buy you a pack of seven cards (sometimes you would get lucky and there would be an eighth card within the sticky wax paper package) plus a large rectangular square of sickeningly sweet bubblegum. If you didn't have a nickel, you could buy single card packs for a penny and get a smaller piece of the too-sweet gum. If I remember correctly, Topps offered baseball and football cards and started offering basketball cards only after my interests had changed to automobiles and girls.
I still remember that a big part of the ritual was cleaning the wax residue off of the top and bottom cards in the pack. So enamored of this was I that, for a time, I even saved the wax paper wrappers the cards came in.
I was fortunate to have a very happy childhood, something that was given to me through no efforts of my own, but something that has proved to be more precious than all of the gold in Fort Knox. The memories of a happy childhood have served me well in adult life. I would like to share some of them with you.
I have this in E-book format. If you would like a copy, contact Tom
