The Latson Disappearance – 60,500 words. My third, and most recent, full length novel. It is a murder/mystery story of a man who returns home one evening and finds that his family and all the household furnishings have disappeared. (What happened to them? Why?) None of his neighbors saw anyone come in or out of the house. The story takes place in Oklahoma city in 1989 but the answer to this mystery is found in Los Angeles several years later. George Latson is up against some very ruthless people but for a long time did not know it -- until they began making mistakes. Then murder and attempted murder commence with tragic results. The Latson Disappearance is a story of murder, mystery, intrigue, and all-too-human evil.
Excerpts from The Latson DisappearanceFrom Chapter 5
But, George did not realize just what an asset he had in Charlie Hahn. In Charlie, he had a man who believed he was innocent and was interested in his case, not only for the case itself, but also because he liked his client and felt him to be the victim of a terribly traumatic experience.
If Charlie Hahn liked and believed in you, then you possessed something that was truly valuable. He would go to the ends of the earth to help you.
From Chapter 19.
George slept soundly in his modest apartment that night, his small home which was not really a home and which was in bad need of the feminine touch. He didn't know it yet, but Charlie and Nell's trip to California would trigger a series of events that would, in time, provide the primer to solve the case and cause it to go down as one of the strangest and most bizarre crimes in modern history.
From Chapter 25
She did find it ironically amusing that she and Kenneth, regardless of their feelings towards each other and the shared Latson disappearance experience, deserved each other. I can't say I didn't get what I prayed for when I was a little girl, she thought dryly, I'm married to a very handsome, very wealthy man that loves me; loves me enough to commit several serious crimes. Mother used to say to be careful what you ask for, that you will get what your heart desires in this life. Of course, Mother didn't know just how true those words are.
From Chapter 32
Charlie was not at full strength either, but looking after Nell had given him incentive to recuperate quickly. George sat with him under the covered table by the pool. "I can't thank you enough, Charlie. If either you or Nell had died, I don't think I could have stood it."
Charlie knew by the look in his eye that the young man was serious and he appreciated him for it. "Well," he answered, embarrassed, "I was just doing my job."
"Yeah, that fantastic salary gave you great incentive to put your life on the line for me," George responded, ironically, "but I really can't thank you enough. Or Nell either. It's really a shame she had to get involved with that crazy lady."
Note from Tom: The Latson Disappearance is based on a true life incident. The idea for this book came from a friend many years ago. He returned home from work one night and found an empty house. Everything was gone, even his clothes. I was intrigued by this and decided to write a murder mystery starting with my friend’s unfortunate experience. Readers who enjoy who-done-it type mystery and suspense will find the experiences of George Latson most intriguing.
Note from Tom:
The Latson Disappearance was the most challenging of the four novels I have written.
